Increasing the Safety of High School Athletes

By working closely with the high school’s medical team, a physical therapist can help reduce the risk of injury, increase the safety of the athlete, and ensure the team has the greatest chance of success.

In a traditional outpatient physical therapy setting, patients are seen by licensed physical therapists in a clinic/outpatient facility. However, there are several opportunities for a physical therapist to utilize their knowledge, skills, and expertise in their community outside of the clinic. An example of this is at the local high schools in the area. Every year across the country, thousands of boys and girls train, practice, and compete in various sports at the high school level. Many high schools are fortunate to have certified athletic trainers (ATCs) who assist the athletes with injury prevention, management, and rehabilitation. Depending on the size of the school, a single ATC might oversee hundreds of athletes each day during a season. Even with assistance from student volunteers, the job can be overwhelming. This is where a physical therapist with a strong orthopaedic background can be a great resource.

I have been volunteering at the same high school I graduated from for the past four and half years. During the school year, I spend a few hours each week in the training room or on the field helping the ATC with preparing the athletes for practice or competition as well as with injury assessment and treatment. Although the ATC and training room are equipped to manage a variety of sports related injuries, there are instances when an injury may require more attention. The ATC and I will confer and suggest that the injured athlete consult with a physician. If the athlete requires physical therapy, then ProActive Physical Therapy is available for all their rehabilitation needs.

By working closely with the high school’s medical team, a physical therapist can help reduce the risk of injury, increase the safety of the athlete, and ensure the team has the greatest chance of success.
