Fibromyalgia is a disorder which causes chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain and presence of at least 11/18 trigger points. Trigger points are sensitive spots in muscles that produce local pain when pressed down on. The exact cause of fibromyalgia is unknown- although it may have to do with changes to pain processing in the brain and a disturbance of the central nervous system’s response to pain.
Signs and symptoms include fatigue, depression, sleep disturbances, cognitive (memory and thinking) dysfunctions, fluctuating pain locations. Treatment for fibromyalgia utilizes a holistic approach due to its multidimensional nature. Physical therapy can help provide exercise programs which can act as a foundation for managing or reducing symptoms.
Research shows that these those suffering from fibromyalgia often respond well to a combination of aerobic, strength, and stretching exercises. A minimum of 60-minute sessions 2 times a week is recommended. Other treatments options that can be explored include aquatic therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, taichi, yoga, and pilates.
